Weissport garbage hauler to receive complaint letter

A half-dozen Weissport residents who live along Bridge Street apparently are not getting the service they believe they deserve from the borough's solid waste hauler.

Council members discussed the issue on Monday night, and upon the advice of solicitor Michael Greek, approved having secretary Jillyan Sterling write a letter outlining the complaints to Advanced Disposal Systems.Council accepted the low bid of $108,528 for a three-year contract from the Northampton-based company last year to service the 400 homes in Weissport. The bid is approximately $4,000 a year more than the 2013 contract.Residents pay $185 for weekly solid waste pickup, while tap rooms pay $220.25 and large businesses pay $349.50 per year.Greek said, "I guarantee a letter will get results you want."A resident who did not want to be identified said the trash hauler has not picked up garbage to those same residents along Bridge Street at least three times, although he did admit that eventually the trash was picked up."You are not entitled to a refund if they did pick it up," Greek said.Council President Gene Kershner said the previous hauler had picked up the resident's trash in the alley behind their home and there was never a problem."That was their designated site," he said. "This hauler has missed enough times to have caused a health and safety problem for our residents."The resident said he called the company several times and that he documented who he talked to and when. The resident said each time he called, he had talked to someone different who had promised that it would be taken care of. The resident said the company promised to stop by the next day, but never did.Kershner said, "If anyone has a problem with garbage pickup, they have to let us know."
