Hearing Aug. 20 for veterans clinic in Polk Twp.

The founder of a veterans clinic asked Polk Township this week to schedule a hearing in time for the Oct. 1 projected opening.

"We'd like to be up and running so our homeless vets are not out in the snow and cold weather," said Mark Bayliss, co-founder of the VALOR Clinic in the Jonas Hotel.The conditional use hearing date was set for 1 p.m. Aug. 20.Emergency reportsWilliam Tippett, chief of the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company, reported that it responded to 18 calls in May, eight in June and 15 in July.He said the fire company will be holding a coin toss at the intersection of routes 209 and 534 on Saturday.The supervisors gave permission for the fire company to use the township's property next to the fire company for the Traveling Road Fire Show by Pierce Distributors to be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday Sept. 29. This show is open to the public.Brian Ahner, Polk Twp. supervisor chairman/roadmaster, said the fire company did an outstanding job in protecting the surrounding properties at the Luna Rossa fire early Sunday morning.The West End Ambulance Association responded to 38 calls in Polk Township in July. Charles Dickinson, WEAA business manager, said the next auxiliary meeting will be held on 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Saylorsburg station on old Route 115 and are looking for volunteers.In other business, the township is considering putting a weight limit on Floyd Drive."We put a weight limit on Carney Road so now trucks are jumping on Floyd Drive," said Ahner.Russell Kresge, township engineer said a traffic study would have to be done.Ahner said that maybe they should look into trucking companies to apply for permits to use the road and if they go over the weight limit, be fined. The board voted 3-0 to have a traffic study done.Additionally the board approved:• A cooperative agreement with Chestnuthill Township in regard to leaf and brush disposal from Polk Township. Polk will haul it to Chestnuthill.• Application of a recycling grant to pay for the purchase of two new dumpsters, one for light metals and the other for newspapers, at a cost of $4,595 each. The cost to have them delivered is $525, for a total of $9,710.• Bob Shupp was hired as a full-time road crew employee at $17.75 an hour. The township employs three full-time and two part-time employees and one has been out for an extended sick leave.Shupp has 40 years of experience running heavy equipment and has a CDL license.• Tabled the issue of roof repair on the back garage to do more research. Ahner thought to do the whole roof it would cost $30,000. He thought the township should do it in sections.
