Police meet firefighters on the court for benefit

Even being lured by their reputed favorite treat, doughnuts, wasn't enough to distract Lehighton area police officers.

They seemed "hypnotized" by the sweets, but maintained their composure and defeated the Lehighton Fire Department, 46-33, in a benefit and fun-filled basketball game Sunday.Several hundred people attended the game held in the Lehighton Area Middle School gym.Proceeds from the game and accompanying basket raffle were the kick-off fundraiser for Lehighton borough's 150th anniversary celebration, which will occur in 2016.Autumn Abelovsky, chairman of the 150th anniversary committee, said, "While the final tally has yet to been determined, committee representatives report that the event raise over $2,000 for the future 150 Celebration."Dubbed "The Battle of the Badges," the victory for the police culminated with the presentation of the "Mayor's Cup" by Lehighton Mayor Thomas Mace.A special guest was Tux the Penguin, from the Wilkes-Barre Penguins, who kept the crowd laughing with his antics. At one point, Tux stunned Lehighton police officers by pulling down his pants midgame.Another hilarious moment happened when referee Kim Lawrence was led off the court by a uniformed police officer who objected to a call.Held in conjunction with the game was the presence a firetruck and police car, which youngsters were allowed to sit in.Police officers participating were Lehighon Chief Brian Biechy, Mike Svetik, Tyler Meek, Corey Frey, Matt Arner, Gabe Szozda, Ryan Kennedy, Bob Defuso, Jay Doll, Frank Lorah, Matthew Bender and Joel Gull.Fire department players were Captain Scott Nothstein, Doug Nothstein, Justin Markell, Brandon Anthony, Zach Haberman, Chris Corcoran, Wayne Nothstein, Dusin Koons, Jake Schlener, Cale Getter, Martin Spezialetti and Ian Shupp.Announcing the game was Colin Hopkins. Referees were Lawrence and Jeremy Stein. Clark Ritter kept the scoreboard. Riley Durshin sang the national anthem.
