Parole, probation hearings held

Carbon County judges held parole/probation revocation hearings on petitions filed by the adult probation office against defendants currently under supervision who have violated the terms of their release.

Hearings were held for the following:Michael Fairchild, 48, of Lehighton, had his paroled revoked on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia on petition filed by probation officer Toby M. Butz for violating conditions of testing positive for nonprescribed opiates.Judge Steven R. Serfass ordered Fairchild remanded to the county prison to serve out his maximum term which runs to Aug. 1.Stephen Smith, 21, of Summit Hill, had his probation revoked on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia on petition filed by probation officer Clifford Eckhart for violating conditions of repeatedly testing positive for a controlled substances, failed to make effort to pay court costs, and failed to perform community service work.Judge Joseph J. Matika resentenced him to serve two to four months in the county prison effective June 13.Eric Willing, 34, of Nesquehoning, had his probation revoked on a charge of unsworn falsification to law enforcement on petition filed by Eckhart for violating conditions of failure to perform community service.Matika recommitted Willing to the county prison to serve 15 to 30 days effective June 13, but he must serve the entire 30 days.Katrina Hollan, 34, of Lansford, probation revoked on a charge of possession of a controlled substance on petition filed by Eckhart for violating conditions of testing positive for a controlled substance which violated the zero-tolerance provision.Matika sentenced him to time served (54 days) to six months in prison.Jeffrey Wentz, 46, of Lehighton, had his parole revoked on a driving under the influence charge on petition filed by Butz for violating conditions of not residing in address given probation office, had new criminal charges filed against him by Lehighon police, tested positive for morphine, and associated with another individual presently on probation.Matika remanded Wentz to the county prison to serve out his maximum sentence, which runs to Sept. 28, 2015.Christine Mertz, 40, of Lehighton, had her parole revoked on a DUI charge on petition filed by Butz for violating conditions by having new criminal charges filed against her by Mahoning Township police, not paid her court costs, did not complete the alcohol highway safety program as ordered, and failed to engage and complete a drug and alcohol treatment program.President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II remanded Mertz to the county prison to serve the balance of her sentence, which runs to June 13.Joseph Bassetti, 51, of Jim Thorpe, had his parole revoked on a DUI charge on petition filed by probation officer Joseph Bettine for violating conditions of being arrested by Pocono Mountain Regional police on drug charges.Matika remanded Bassetti to the county prison to serve 90 days "street time," which was effective March 14.Joseph Becker, 32, of Summit Hill, had his bail revoked on petition filed by Eckhart for violating conditions by failing to submit to scheduled drug screens which violated the zero-tolerance provision.Matika reset the bail at $35,000.
