Rough finish for Johnson, Keselowski

LONG POND - A pit road incident during Sunday's Pocono 400 at "The Tricky Triangle" ruined any chance of Jimmie Johnson winning three consecutive Sprint Cup Series races for the third time in his career.

Johnson, a six-time champion, was coming off back-to-back wins at Charlotte and Dover. Prior to that, he was winless in the first 11 races of the season. On Lap 73 with the field under caution for debris on the track, Johnson went into the pits for what appeared to be a two-tire stop and exited his stall but immediately slammed into Marcos Ambrose while exiting. Ambrose was trying to enter his pit stall.,.Johnson's car took the brunt of the damage, be he still managed to finished sixth in the race. Ambrose ended up 24th."Chad (Knaus, crew chief) thought Ambrose was on his way out. He told me there were two out there, but I didn't know (Ambrose) was trying to get in and we made contact," Johnson said. "It was just a lot of confusion on pit road."Chad made a great call to give me two (tires) to get the track position late in the race. We took on just right-side tires and were way tighter than what we anticipated in the end and I was kind of hanging on in that last run."Brad Keselowski had dominated most of the race and was leading when his car began to overheat due to a hot dog wrapper stuck to the front of his grill. He pulled behind the lapped car of Danica Patrick with five laps to go to try to get the trash to blow away, but lost momentum and Dale Earnhardt Jr. got by him and took the checkered flag.Keselowski got close to Earnhardt a couple of times before the finish, but couldn't get back around him.Keselowski finished second followed by Kurt Busch in third. Rounding out the top five were pole-sitter Denny Hamlin and rookie Kyle Larson."I realized I made a mistake," Keselowski told reporters afterwards when he went to try and clean it off."I don't think it came off. I don't know. haven't seen what it looked like before and after. It was definitely a mistake because the engine made it, but it probably shouldn't have. It was one of those deals, "I think I was going to get passed because I was really down on power down the straightaway."Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, Martin Truex Jr. and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top 10.At one point, it looked like the Stewart-Haas contingent of Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick could finish 1-2-3, but Busch was the lone driver to finish near the front. It was his first top 10 finish since he won at Martinsville nine races ago."It was a nice solid day, just a top-five car and we cashed in on a top-five finish," Busch said. "Starting second, we were able to hold the track position early. Daniel was smooth on what pit calls to make and the crew guys had sufficient pit stops, and it was just solid execution, a nice turn of the page, so to speak, and congratulations to our team and ourselves for shedding that new-team skin and moving into the second part of the year with a solid-type finish as this."This is what we need to start building our consistency on."I'm real proud of the change we made on the car to find some speed, and now we'll just try to develop it week in, week out."Stewart was the leader at the halfway point, but a pit stop violation dropped him to 31st and he took the blame completely, finishing 13th. Harvick wound up 14th.The first of seven cautions of the day came ot on Lap 31 for a fire in the exit of Turn 2 in the infield. On Lap 59, the yellow came out again for debri on the track in Turn 3 and again on Lap 71 for debris in Turn 1.Dave Blaney spun out on Lap 80 in Turn 1 to cause the fourth caution of the afternoon and again on Lap 117 for possible fluid on the track.Danica Patrick hit the wall on Lap 137 in Turn 3 and on Lap 142, Kasey Kahne hit the wall on the backstretch and also collected Carl Edwards, who nailed Greg Biffle. There were 21 lead changes and 10 different leaders over the 160 -lap race.Gordon took over the points lead from Matt Kenseth by 16 points.
