Music of the Civil War set for June 26

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, The GAR Cemetery Association and the Summit Hill Heritage Center will host commonwealth speaker musician Thomas Jolin.

He will perform music of the Civil War at 7 p.m. on June 26 at the Heritage Center in Summit Hill.Jolin kicks off a weekend of events celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ludlow Park and the Civil War Monument.At 6 p.m. a reception will take place at the historic GAR Civil War Cemetery on east White Street. Both events are free and open to the public.Thomas Jolin has produced eight recordings. He has been a solo performer since 1978, playing the hammered dulcimer, banjo, button accordion and harmonica.He is an instrument builder, specializing in the hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer and the bowed psaltery.He is an artist for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and is a sought-after artist in residence. His performances are loaded with humor, sometimes intentionally.This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, sponsored in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.The Heritage Center provides a community meeting place for all in the greater Panther Valley area; perpetual facility for the Community Food Bank; venue for low-cost musical, cultural, historical, educational events; and no-cost place for community service groups to meet.The GAR Cemetery Association manages the oldest cemetery in Summit Hill, created so the soldiers and their families would have a proper burial site.The GAR Cemetery was established in 1870.
