Beaver Meadows man admits to two DUIs

A Carbon County man pleaded guilty on Tuesday in the county court to two driving under the influence counts and was immediately sentenced to a prison term.

He was one of numerous defendants in pending cases to enter a plea before Carbon Judge Joseph J. Matika.Thomas Allan Gerhard, 51, of Beaver Meadows, was arrested twice along Broad Street in his hometown by borough police.He was arrested on Jan. 8, 2013, following a traffic stop. Given a test, the result was 0.29 BAC. The second arrest occurred on March 27, 2013, following a traffic stop. Given a test, the result was 0.21 BAC.Gerhard said he let alcohol take control of his life, and he was now going to take it back.He said he entered a Salvation Army rehabilitation inpatient program in Philadelphia to address his issues and successfully completed it.On the first count Matika sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, and one-year license suspension.On the second count he was sentenced to serve 90 days to 24 months in jail, a fine of $1,500, and an 18-month license suspension, followed by three years probation. The jail terms run concurrently.He was also ordered to render 100 hours of community service and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.He was given credit for 270 days spent in the inpatient program and was immediately paroled.The defendant must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
