Tamaqua man charged after shoplifting, threats

A reported shoplifting incident at the Family Dollar Store, 137 N. Railroad St., Tamaqua, on Monday resulted in a police officer employing the use of a stun gun on the suspect.

Police were called to the store at 9:36 a.m. after a male was observed placing items in his shorts. The man was described as wearing white shorts and a gray thermal shirt.As officers arrived they saw a male fitting the description leaving the store. The man, identified as Daniel Leary, 35, of 101 Pine St., Tamaqua, refused to heed the officer's request to stop. Instead he cursed and yelled obscenities to the officer when asked for identification.Leary continued walking away from the store toward Pine Street, despite repeated requests from the officer to stop.At one point Leary turned to the officer in a threatening manner, continuing to cause a commotion, yelling and cursing. The officer warned Leary he was about to be "tasered" if he didn't listen and then followed through, the probes striking Leary's chest. The jolt caused him to fall to the sidewalk, striking his head.A search of the suspect discovered two tubes of super glue, an iPhone holder and two bottles of lavender musk shower gel, with a value of $7.69.Leary was charged with making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.
