Bombers blanked again in CL

Mike Svetik is unsure what to do next.

The second year baseball coach wants nothing more than to ease the pressure on his Palmerton baseball team in the batter's box.Over the team's first three Colonial League games, Svetik had not seen his Bombers cross home plate once.Against South Division front-runner Notre Dame of Green Pond on Wednesday, the Bombers were held scoreless once again and dropped a 6-0 setback to the Crusaders."We put some kids in that haven't started for us to try and jump start things a bit," said Svetik, who's in search for the spark to his offense. "We had some nice at bats, but we need to take another step here because we haven't scored a run in our league yet."We need to get that straightened out because it puts too much pressure on your defense and your pitcher because when you're not scoring, now you know you got to hold the other team to fewer runs. So, that's just too much pressure. The bats have to open up so we can start taking a little pressure off ourselves."Jon Schwartz looked like he may have given the Bombers the spark needed to get its offense going in the first inning against the Crusaders. However, Schwartz's single ended up being one of just two Bomberhits against the Crusaders' Andrew Valkenburg. Nick Frey got the other hit with a single in the fifth. After Schwartz's hit, Valkenburg went on to strike out eight straight batters between the first and fourth innings. The Crusaders' lefty went on to finish with 10 strikeouts in his complete game shutout."He did what a pitcher suppose to, keep batters off-balance," Svetik added. "He threw some off speed pitches on counts where you normally don't see them, but when you get a lead, and you're a good pitcher, that's what happens. He kept everyone off balance with his off-speed pitch today."While the Bombers struggled offensively, the defense pulled off two doubles plays one in the first with bases loaded and the other came in the sixth. The strong defense wasn't limited to double plays though, as Schwartz, the Bombers' centerfielder, saved pitcher Nick Frey some damage to his ERA as he made two spectacular catches in the fifth, one with the bases loaded.Despite the recent struggles with the bat Palmerton did score eight runs in a non-league loss to Lehighton last Saturday Svetik continues to be positive."I keep telling my kids our defense right now is a positive," said Svetik, and it definitely showed. "Our pitching hasn't been bad, but it's the middle of the road right now and we need to step that up. And, obviously, our hitting."We know we need to step that up a little bit and get some runs on the board. We had a great game against Lehighton, but that's the only game we had. We played five games and only one good game of hitting. We had more hits in that one game then we had combined in four games. You can't do that. You're not going to win games."Notre Dame 110 130 0 - 6 8 0Palmerton 000 000 0 - 0 2 1Valkenburg and Pascucci; Frey, Buck (5), Kocis (7) and C. Cook. W - Valkenburg. L - Frey.
