Historic Schuylkill covered bridge to be fixed

A Schuylkill County company will repair a historic covered bridge in the tiny community of Rock.

County commissioners on Wednesday awarded the job to Deblin Inc., of Mechanicsburg, which submitted the lowest bid for the project, $936,544.The project was bid through the state Department of Transportation's Engineering and Construction Management program and verified by PennDOT.The construction costs will be paid by reimbursement through PennDOT by a National Historic Covered Bridge grant.The Rock bridge is one of two in the county.Two other firms also bid on the project. They were Clearwater Construction of Mercer County, which offered to do the work for $1.56 million, and J.D. Eckman of Chester County, which bid $1,177,282.All three commissioners Gary J. Hess, George F. Halcovage Jr. and chairman Frank J. Staudenmeier voted in favor of the award.The county-owned bridge, built in 1870, is 39 feet long and 13 feet, 5 inches wide. It's on Route 452, just east of Rock, Washington Township.
