It's been said that "Every child is an artist. The challenge is to remain an artist after you grow up."

To help celebrate children's artistic creations, an inaugural art show was held recently at both Mahoning and Shull-David Elementary schools in Lehighton. The event was the brain child of art teacher Adrienne Fedor, who wanted to showcase the students' artistic talents."I was pleased to see that students' musical talents were celebrated through their winter and spring music concerts and that their athletic talents were celebrated through Olympic Day," Fedor said."However, after seeing how talented my students are in art, I felt that we needed to celebrate their wonderful talents."Every student in grades kindergarten through four was asked to select his or her favorite art project to be in the art show."I felt that it was important to let the students choose their artwork because it reflects themselves as an artist and gives them a sense of ownership as well," Fedor said.Artwork for the show included drawings, paintings, pottery, sculptures and weavings.Students, their families and friends were invited to enjoy the artwork and other activities, including demonstrating their creative side by drawing and coloring in the art room. All proceeds from a PTO-sponsored bake sale that took place during the event benefitted the art program. The Scholastic Book Fair was held in conjunction with each art show. Under the guidance of librarian Diane Brownmiller, all proceeds from the book fairs benefitted the respective library at each school."Both art shows turned out to be a success and I am more than pleased to see how proud my students were to show their family and friends their selected artwork," Fedor said."It was exciting to see the wonderful turnout for our inaugural Art Show and Book Fair at both Mahoning and Shull-David Elementary schools," Principal Aaron Sebelin said."This schoolwide event is a great way to show support for our art program and library."For more information about all that is going on throughout Lehighton Area School District, visit
