A Carbon County man admitted in the county court on Thursday that he sexually assaulted an extremely mentally disabled woman.

He entered a guilty plea before Judge Steven R. Serfass.Eduardo Vayas Jr., 53, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault on a person with mental disabilities, a misdemeanor, while a charge of aggravated indecent assault on a person with mental disabilities, a felony, was dropped.Vayas was charged by Lehighton police for an incident that occurred on Dec. 17, 2013, at a residence in the borough.Defense attorney Gregory Lee Mousseau, of the public defenders office, said his client has mental health issues and is currently on medication for it.The mother of the woman, who was 23 at the time, told police of the assault. She said that while she was not at home Vayas touched the girl inappropriately in her private area. She told Serfass that since the incident the girl has gone into a deep depression. She is extremely scared and fearful and won't leave their home, the mother told the court. She said her daughter still refuses to leave their home, even after they learned from police that Vayas was in prison. The mother said, "She just sits in the dark all day."Vayas is currently in the Monroe County prison on a probation violation filed by authorities in that county.Serfass accepted the plea but deferred sentencing because the charge falls under the provisions of Megan's Law.Serfass ordered the adult probation office prepare a presentence investigation report.Vayas must also be evaluated by the state's sexual assessment board to determine if he is a violent sexual predator.
