Schuylkill candidate charged with DUI

A Schuylkill County man charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he crashed his car on Feb. 24 is a candidate for state representative.

James A. Barton, 49, of Orwigsburg, in October announced his plans to campaign for the 124th district seat currently held by fellow Republican Jerry Knowles.The district includes parts of Berks and Schuylkill counties.Barton early Thursday said he would continue his campaign.Barton, who is vice president of Jack Rich Inc. of Frackville, lost control of his sport utility vehicle on Red Dale Road in West Brunswick Township at 11:08 p.m. Feb. 24, state police said.He was charged by state Trooper Stephen D. Kleeman of the Schuylkill Haven barracks on March 3 through District Judge James Ferrier of Orwigsburg.In a news release police said Barton swerved to avoid a deer, crossed the road, went up an embankment and struck a utility pole. The SUV continued on to hit a tree, then stopped on the road, blocking both lanes.Barton, who wasn't hurt, showed signs of intoxication, troopers said.He was charged with driving under the influence, disregarding traffic lanes, failing to drive at a safe speed and careless driving, they said.The SUV was damaged and could not be driven.
