Parent concerned about author's visit to Panther Valley

A parent voiced concern to the Panther Valley School Board Thursday about having middle school students attend a talk by a noted author who will be visiting the school district on March 12.

Karen Berk said the novel "Crank" has material she feels is inappropriate for middle school students.Berk told the board the book mentions such things as "fun from protected sex," details on how to smoke meth, the protagonist getting high with her father, and some quotes on group sex.Superintendent of Schools Rosemary Porembo said the talk will be at the high school. Only middle school students who have signed permission slips from their parents can attend.She said over two dozen middle school students have signed permission slips.The author, Ellen Louise Hopkins, has published several novels that made it to the bestselling list of the New York Times.
