Flames lit up the Lewistown Valley sky early Thursday morning as a 1,000-pound propane tank burned at Koch's Turkey Farm, located at 416 Valley Road.

Firefighters from almost one dozen communities spent two hours working to keep the fire from spreading to the main building, which had to be evacuated. Four other propane tanks, which fed into the one on fire, were cooled with a constant spray of water in an effort to prevent an explosion. Responding fire companies included units from Walker/New England Valley, West Penn Township, Tuscarora, New Ringgold, Tamaqua, Ryan Township, Schuylkill Haven, Hometown and Middleport, as well as local fire police.The fire was declared contained shortly after 2 a.m. There were no reported injuries or other damages.Barbara Koch commented, "We were very lucky. Two of our propane tanks exploded, but they were able to contain the fire and there was no structural damage. We are working today and they are replacing the propane tanks today. We are very grateful for the firefighters, who endured a very long, cold night."
