Colts cruise to win

Last week, nothing seemed to go right for the Marian basketball program.

On Monday, four-year starter, team leader and top scorer Anthony Agosti suffered a broken leg against Shenandoah Valley and will miss the rest of the season.Three days later, the Colts lost key reserve John Woitko for the year with a broken hand suffered against Pius X, where Marian scored only 21 points (the lowest point total in team history). In desperate need of some good news, the Colts finally caught the "break" they were looking for on Saturday, as Marian picked up a 51-30 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe. The win improves Marian's overall record to 8-11 (6-5 league) on the season with three games to play. In order for the Colts to clinch a District playoff berth, they will need to beat either Mahanoy Area tonight or Weatherly on Thursday evening."The injuries are unfortunate, but it's now time for other people to step up," stated Marian head coach John Patton. "We told the kids that we're going to do whatever we can with whoever we have. The game against Pius X wasn't pretty, but I'm proud of the kids for rebounding and coming away with a big win this afternoon."After the Olympians took an early 7-5 lead off two Bryce Micciche field goals, Marian went on an 11-0 run to take a 16-7 lead late in the first quarter. Jim Thorpe eventually closed the deficit to four points, but Marian's Nick Wesner came off the bench and scored eight of his team's 11 second quarter points to give the Colts a 27-18 edge at halftime.Wesner came into the game averaging just 2.1 points per contest, but provided Marian with a big boost of momentum."We have guys on this team that are capable of doing things for us, and now they're getting an opportunity to show what they can do," added Patton. "Nick came in and did a great job for us today. We have guys stepping up and we're finding our niche and that's good to see."As Marian's lead increased to double-figures early in the third quarter, turnovers and missed shots began taking their toll on the Olympians. Fourteen of Jim Thorpe's 22 turnovers occurred in the second half, while the Olympians converted just one of their final ten shots from the floor. After starting the year 2-1, Jim Thorpe has now lost 16 straight games under first-year head coach Grant Whary."It's been a tough season, but I certainly can't fault their effort," said Whary. "The attitude has been great and the kids are still fighting and working hard in practice. It would have been nice to get a few more wins, but sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce the way you want it to."Nico Agosti, taking a page out of his brother's playbook, led Marian with 13 points."Today, we played for pride. Next week, we play for the playoffs," concluded Patton, as a win over either Mahanoy Area or Weatherly would put the Colts in the Distrcit 11 Class A Tournament for the ninth consecutive season. For Jim Thorpe (2-18, 1-9), Bryce Micciche scored 12 points.JIM THORPECarroll 0-0-0-0, Principe 0-0-0-0, B.
