Vandals knock over Christmas trees in Palmerton

A handful of Christmas trees in the Palmerton Borough Park were the target of vandalism within hours after they were set up over the weekend.

Seven of the 48 trees set up on Sunday in preparation for the Christmas in the Park program this coming weekend were knocked over, and three were thrown into the creek.Word of the vandalism was posted by Christmas in the Park Committee chairperson Michele O'Neill on her Facebook page Monday morning. She said over 30 people came on Sunday to help get the event under way. Decorating began on Monday."All (of the trees) are now back in place, and nothing damaged, however, I would like it known and please share this information, that this will not be tolerated," O'Neill said her on Facebook page. "The Palmerton police have already been made aware of the situation, and if any type of vandalism occurs, those that are involved will be prosecuted by the Holiday Lighting Committee."O'Neill added on her post that it's imperative for the community to band together to "make this event a wonderful thing for Palmerton.""If you see anything, hear anything, please call the police and make them aware," she said. "Vandalism will not (stop) this event, but we as a town can stop the vandals."Palmerton's Christmas in the Park program will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the borough park. The program will feature 48 decorated trees from various members of the community that will line the walkways of the park, and be lit and decorated by the sponsor in time for the event. Each tree will be unique, and will have the sponsor noted on the plaque by their tree. The event will also be filled with local singing groups, horse and wagon rides, and a visit from Santa. Vendors will sell hot soups, bake sales, walking tacos, hot chocolates, and other items.
