Two Carbon County drivers are facing driving under the influence (DUI) charges after being involved in separate crashes on county roads.

State police at Lehighton said Tammy Callahan, 29, of Kunkletown, was driving a Honda CRV westbound on Little Gap Road, in Lower Towamensing Township, about 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at a high rate of speed, crossing the double yellow line. The Honda traveled off the road and struck a tree head-on.When troopers arrived they observed the Honda against the tree with no skid marks on the road, and debris from the vehicle scattered across the road.Troopers said about 12 hypodermic needles were found in the immediate area and four were recovered in the vehicle.Callahan told troopers she "dozed off" before striking the tree. She explained she took several different medications before operating the vehicle, as well as using cocaine and heroin, troopers said.Callahan sustained a bruised lung and a fractured right ankle. She was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment. The DUI charge is pending.Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the Aquashicola Fire Company and Palmerton ambulance personnel.The second crash occurred about 10:56 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, along SR209, in the area of 2868 Interchange Road in Franklin Township.Troopers said Shannon M. Hettler, 32, of Lehighton, was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer southbound and traveling too fast for a curve in the road. The Explorer left the right side of the road and rolled over.Troopers said Hettler was found to be under the influence of alcohol. A passenger, Randi A. Solt, 24, of Lehighton, was injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital by Palmerton ambulance. Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the Franklin Township Fire Company.The DUI charge is pending completion of the investigation, troopers added.
