Local teens to attend Keystone Girls State

Two area girls have been selected to attend Keystone Girls State by the American Legion Auxiliary Shoemaker-Haydt Unit 314, Lehighton.

Mallory Brinley is the daughter of Patricia Brinley and Ross Brinley of New Tripoli. She attends Northwestern Lehigh High School and plans to attend college with a major in political science.Brinley is active in field hockey, track and field, cross country, science and drama clubs, and scholastic scrimmage. She is president of the school's National Honor Society.Also attending Girls State is Schyler Cordova, the daughter of Cindy and Stanley Cordova of Lehighton. She is a student at Lehighton Area High School and plans to attend college with a major in international relations.Cordova is active in show choir, jazz choir, student council, varsity basketball and Camp Camelot for Children.She is president of the LAHS Class of 2014, vice president of the chorus, co-captain of the girls' varsity soccer team and a HOBY alumna. During the 2012-2013 school year, Cordova was selected to District 10 and regional chorus and performed with the ACDA National Honor Choir in Dallas, Texas. She is a member of the National Honor Society.Cordova was recently honored with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Outstanding Character in West Point, N.Y.This is the 68th session of Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Approximately 200 girls from Pennsylvania will attend.Keystone Girls State offers valuable government and leadership training, and aims to educate young women about the duties, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.Attendees are selected for their leadership abilities, character, good citizenship and scholarship. Students selected are juniors in high school and must return in their senior year.
