Fourteen arraigned on drug charges

The court of District Judge Stephen Bayer in Tamaqua was a very busy place Thursday, as law enforcement officials conducted a sweep of alleged drug dealers, the third such sweep in Schuylkill County in the last two weeks.

The defendants included: Leslie Napolitano, 26, of Lansford, who was charged in connection with heroin buys on April 17, April 18 and May 2. Napolitano, who is eight months pregnant, appealed to the judge for leniency due to her pregnancy. While the judge was sympathetic, he noted her criminal record indicated she had been convicted on drug charges in Carbon County and was out on bail awaiting sentencing and was apparently still selling drugs. He set bail at $10,000 straight cash for each of the three sets of charges, explaining she would need $30,000 in order to make bail.Latia Matrician, 20, of Lansford, was charged in connection with heroin incidents on May 15 and May 23. In addition to the drug charges, she was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child as she apparently took her 9-month old child with her for the May 15 offense. Her bail was set at $10,000, 10 percent, for each case. Her grandfather was in court and provided the required bail.Matthew Matalavage, 19, of Tamaqua, was charged in relation to three alleged heroin and marijuana buys Feb. 21, March 11 and April 17. The judge set bail at $10,000 straight cash for one case and $10,000 unsecured in the other two cases.Travis Hill, 20, of Tamaqua, is a co-conspirator with Matalavage in the April 17 heroin buy. His bail was set at $10,000 straight.Kayleen Bumberger, 41, of Tamaqua, was charged in connection with marijuana sales on Feb. 21, March 14 and March 19. Bail was set at $5,000 for each of the three cases.Christopher Puksar, 26, of Lansford, allegedly sold heroin on Dec. 12 and Dec. 20, 2012 and on Jan. 8, 2013. Bail was set at $10,000 straight cash in each case.Richard Frick, 58, of Tamaqua, spent the morning in St. Luke's Miners Hospital after he told officers he was having medical issues when they arrested him. He did make it to court later in the day and was arraigned in connection with three marijuana sales March 19, April 17 and May 2. His bail was set at $10,000 percentage in one case and $10,000 unsecured in the other two cases. He was able to post bail.Several alleged dealers were arraigned earlier this past week.Frederick King, 41, of Mahanoy City was arraigned on Monday before District Judge Anthony Kilker. He was charged in connection with heroin sales on April 18 and May 9. Bail was set at $25,000 percentage in each of the cases.Daquawn King, 24, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who is Frederick's son, was arraigned on Saturday after a controlled buy. Judge Kilker set his bail at $25,000 percentage, which was posted on Wednesday.Adam Kasten, 20, of Middleport, was picked up on May 23 and arraigned before District Judge Carol Pankake. He was charged in connection with incidents on April 17 and May 2. Bail was set at $25,000 percentage, which he was unable to post.April Miller, 35, of Tamaqua, will be arraigned at a later date as she is currently lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, on other charges. She faces charges in connection with a March 19 case.Michelle Murphy, 40, of Tamaqua, was picked up and arraigned before Judge Bayer last Friday in connection with an April 17 offense. Her bail was set at $15,000 percentage. Unable to post the required 10 percent, she remains lodged in the county prison.Alfred A. Bond, 26, of Coaldale, was arraigned before Bayer on Sunday morning. He was charged in connection with a Dec. 12, 2012 offense. Bail was set at $25,000 percent, which he was unable to post.Kathleen McCormick, 33, of Tamaqua, has had a warrant issued for her arrest. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact police at (570) 668-5000 or 668-6100.Tamaqua Police received assistance from Rush Township Sergeant Duane Frederick, Lansford Police, Pennsylvania State Police, the Schuylkill County Drug Task Force, the Schuylkill County Sheriff's Department and the office of Schuylkill County District Attorney Karen Byrnes-Noon.
