As yard sale season approaches, the Lehighton Borough Police Department would like to remind residents and neighbors of a recently enacted borough ordinance regarding the placement of signs on utility poles, light posts or sign posts in the borough.

It is unlawful for any person to post or hang upon any utility pole, light post, sign or sign post owned by the Borough or any other public utility or entity, any sign, banner, poster, etc. regardless of the method of attachment.This includes yard sale signs, business signs, lost pet signs and any other signs or that persons may place on utility poles, whether they are stapled, nailed, taped or strung upon the posts or poles.The fires for violations of the ordinance are $25 for each violation. Each violation is for each sign placed on a utility pole. Therefore, if someone posts sign on 10 utility poles, they would be facing a total of $250 in fines. In addition, state law prohibits the use of nails or other metal fasteners on utility poles. This is a summary offense and is also a violation for each such posting. Being state law, this would include utility poles throughout the Commonwealth, not just in the Borough.The ordinance and statute will be strictly enforced in the Borough of Lehighton. There will be no warnings after April 25, 2013. After this date, all violators of the ordinance and/or statute will be prosecuted.A common and useful way to post signs for yard sales and other events would be to place them on yard sighs. such as the ones used by persons running for elected office. Get permission from the landowner before placing the signs. Another option is to utilize print and Internet resources such as Facebook to post yard sale and other information.
