Members of the West Penn Lions Club spent a couple hours Wednesday evening prepping and wrapping over 1,000 white spruce seedlings to be given to all elementary students in the Tamaqua Area School District.

The project was done as part of the Lions Club Global Service Action Campaign created to focus efforts on preserving and protecting the environment.Project coordinator and club secretary Robert Neumoyer, stated the event coincides with Arbor Day, which is April 26. Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a globally recognized holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872."Our project gives children the opportunity to give back to the community, as well as providing benefits for future generations," said Liz McElwee, District Governor Elect, 14-U. "This campaign implement projects that improve and protect the environment, by encouraging people to plant trees or collect recyclables."West Penn Lions President Gary Kistler stated the club's appreciation to the PA Game Commission, members and others for donating the seedlings. He also gave appreciations to the volunteering members, as well as Steven Behr, Principal of the Tamaqua Area School District´s elementary schools."Through service, Lions have impacted the lives of millions of people. Now more than ever, we are in a position to extend our network of care," said Neumoyer, past District Governor. "To show this strength, Lions have the opportunity to participate in a number of special service action campaigns."
