Volunteers, supplies needed for Owl Creek Intersection Project

Volunteers with the Owl Creek Intersection Project in South Tamaqua are in desperate need of volunteers and supplies.

"Adding to the increase in stolen items, our flag and rope are damaged and need replaced," said project founder Georgine Wentz. "In addition to needing more volunteers, we also need a new 3-foot by 5-foot flag, coated 100-foot rope, 13 small flags for the holidays and 13 artificial patriotic flowers."Wentz, who has purchased the flag and rope every year for the past 7 years, said, "I can no longer do so and hope others will step up."Volunteers added that over the past few years, a number of items has been stolen from the park, to include an owl statue and painted crafts placed on the stones' edges."We are always looking for new volunteers to help keep the park looking beautiful as well as keep an eye on it," added volunteer Reggie Heffelfinger of Tamaqua. "Most current volunteers are simply getting too old."Despite this, Wentz and a few other older volunteers spend about 20 hours a month cleaning and maintaining the park. The project, finished in 2006, widened the entrance to Owl Creek Road and gave visitors a safe entry and exit to an intersecting bicycle and walk path.If anyoneone is interested in donated their time or supplies, call Wentz at (570) 668-5608."Sadly, if no one comes forward, the pole, flag and light will have to be removed," exclaimed Wentz.
