A Carbon County man, who previously admitted to assaulting the mother of his children, was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday morning in the county court.

He was one of five defendants who had pleaded guilty to criminal counts to be sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass.Lehighton incidentEdward S. Barrett Jr., 40, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve one to two years in a state prison on a charge of simple assault and six to 12 months for defiant trespass, with the terms running concurrently.Barrett was arrested by Lehighton police for an incident on April 16, 2012. He went to the home of Melissa Coffin, at 626 Coal St., and assaulted her. When police arrived on scene they found Coffin bleeding profusely from stab wounds. She was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment and has recovered.Prior to the sentence being imposed Barrett told Serfass, "You might as well give me a death sentence, because I'm not going to serve the sentence."When Serfass inquired what Barrett meant by not serving the sentence, he replied, "You'll see."Coffin told Serfass she wanted Barrett to come home because his children wanted him back and she needed him to help with bills. She said she has forgiven him for what happened.Barrett said he was sorry for what happened and felt he had spent enough time in jail for the offense.Reportedly, Barrett committed the offense a day after a protection from abuse order Coffin had in place, was lifted at her request.Barrett is also facing a probation violation hearing and a jail term for that.In addition to the jail term Serfass ordered Barrett to get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and attend and complete a anger management course.He was given credit for 366 days spent in jail on the charge. Although the credit exceeds the minimum Barrett will be transferred to a state prison following the probation proceeding as he is now under the jurisdiction of the state parole and probation board, who will determine is release date.Other casesOther defendants sentenced by Serfass included:Jennifer Coxe, 38, of Weatherly, was sentenced on two counts of driving under the influence (DUI). She was arrested for the first DUI on March 13, 2010, along North St., by Weatherly police, and on the second count on July 22, 2012, by state police at Lehighton along SR209 in Lehighton. In the first case she had a .16BAC, and in the second, a .12BAC.On the first DUI case she had been placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) probation program for first time offenders but was revoked from it for the second DUI arrest.On the July 2012 charge she was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, pay a fine of $300, one year license suspension, get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render 25 hours of community service.On the second count she was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300, and render 25 more hours of community service. The terms run consecutively.On a summary offense of disorderly conduct she was fined $300.The prison term begins at 9 a.m. on April 29. However, Coxe said she spent 28 days in a inpatient rehab program. If verified, she will be given credit against the prison term and will not have to report on April 29, Serfass said.John J. Finn, 30, of Wapwallopen, was sentenced to serve 30 days to six months in prison on a DUI charge. He was arrested on Oct. 8, 2011, along the turnpike in East Penn Township by state police at the Pocono barracks. Given a test, the result was .15BAC.Finn went on trial on the charge and was found guilty by a jury. Serfass found him guilty of three motor vehicle code violations at the conclusion of the trial.Serfass also ordered Finn to pay a fine of $750, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 50 hours of community service. On the summary offenses he was fined a total of $375.60.The prison term was delayed as Finn indicated he might appeal the jury's verdict.Harry W. Compton III, 57, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 30 days in the county prison on a charge of driving under suspension-DUI related, followed by 30 days in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program (IPP) with electronic monitoring.Compton was arrested on April 11, 2012, along Blakeslee Blvd., by Mahoning Township police. He was stopped for an equipment violation.He was also fined $500 and will lose his license for a year.He will begin the jail term on April 23 at 1:30 p,.m. and serve it on consecutive three day periods of Tuesday through Friday.Troy Michael Fairchild Sr., 40, of Coaldale, was placed on probation for 24 months on a charge of receiving stolen property. He was charged by state police at Lehighton for incidents at the Country Junction store in Towamensing Township. He made purchases on the account of another person without their permission.He was also ordered to render 100 hours of community service.Fairchild is currently in the county prison serving six to 23 months on unrelated charges.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which average close to $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
