After a long winter Jim Thorpe and Marian faced off yesterday afternoon at Olympian stadium for each squad's first dual meet of the season.

It was cold, it was windy, and at times it was wet, but both squads looked eager to get the track season underway. At the end of the day Marian and Jim Thorpe split victories with Marian taking the boys meet 97-53, while the JT girls edged the Fillies 79-67.Marian senior John Julian was a big reason why the Colts had a solid day.Julian was a winner in the 100 high hurdles (18.30), 400 meter run (47.4), 300 intermediate hurdles (47.4), and was part of the 1600 meter relay team that took first on the afternoon."We as seniors came into this meet with a bit of a chip on our shoulders because we've never beaten Jim Thorpe in my time here," said Julian. "Getting a win like this early in the season gives us a strong start, which is always a good thing at the beginning of the season."Julian was part of the 1600M relay team that won the District 11 AA title last season. Although, the Colts have lost two member from that team in Paul Martin and Matt Grega, Julian still believes they have a strong chance at doing some damage in the event once again this season."It's important for myself and for the other guys on our 1600M relay team to get off to good starts," said Julian. "Today was a good day for me and all of our other guys ran well today too. The more we win, especially early on gives us more confidence, which helps us run better."Marian coach John Boyle finally got on the board with a boys win over the Olympians. It was the first time the Colts beat Thorpe under Boyle."This was a nice win because it was the first time we've beat these guys since I've been here," said Boyle. "We always look forward to coming here because coach Miller and his staff do a good job and it's a nice facility. They always have a solid team as well, so to get an early win against them is huge for us."Corey Quick was also a double event winner for the Colts, placing first in the javelin (169-10) and shotput (35-11).Jim Thorpe's Anjelica Poalillo was the big contributor to the Lady Olympians, going four-for-four in her individual events on the day.Poalillo took first in the 100M (13.65), 200M (28.1), 400M (1:06.2), and the long jump (14-7.5)."It's my senior season, so I'm really trying to push myself early and run upfront in order to get myself ready for the big meets at the end of the season," said Poalillo. "I really want to qualify for states this year and I'm going to work as hard as I possibly can to achieve that goal.""Anjelica is just such a nice kid to have on your squad," said Thorpe coach Frank Miller. "She's a senior leader and she really helped propel us to victory today on the girls side. She won all four of her individual events today and that's the first time in my seven years as head coach that has happened."Miller was also happy to get a win right out of the gates against an always competitive Marian squad."It's always a good sign to win early against Marian," said Miller. "They always have quality athletes and it's good for our girls to get a victory under their belt. We still have a lot of athletes to develop, but we have talent and we have some hardworkers, so we're definitely looking to just keep getting better as the season goes on."Jim Thorpe's Devon Matz and Courtney Capper also had a nice day for the Olympians. Matz won both the 100HH and 300 IH, and was part of the 1600M relay squad that took first.
