Hazleton driver facing DUI count

A Hazleton man has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol by McAdoo police.

Officer Steven Homanko was monitoring traffic, concentrating on speed, on Feb. 24 when he observed a silver Honda Pilot traveling in excess of 50 miles-per-hour in a 25 zone on Kennedy Drive. The officer gave chase, stopping the vehicle in the area of Beaver Brook.When asking the driver for identification and registration, Homanko noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from the SUV. The driver, identified as Eladio Matos, 39, who had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. Initially, Matos claimed the odor was most likely coming from a passenger in the vehicle. The four passengers included two children under the age of 10, Matos' wife and an adult male.Matos later admitted drinking two beers in the Allentown area. He failed three field sobriety tests and agreed to have blood testing done at the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville. The blood test indicated a .133 blood alcohol level.He was charged with DUI, driving intoxicated with minors in the vehicle, endangering the welfare of children and careless driving.
