Woman jailed for incident at prison

A Northampton County woman was jailed on Sunday after she allegedly tried to bring illegal drugs into the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy, located at 301 Morea Rd., in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Frackville said Alicia M. Rivera, 27, of Freemansburg, arrived at the prison about 11 a.m. to visit an inmate. A search of her person was conducted by prison staff members before she entered the visitors' room.The search revealed Rivera was in possession of seven orange pills suspected to be suboxone, and 16 individual baggies of suspected heroin.Rivera and the suspected drugs were transported to the Frackville barracks for further investigation.Rivera was charged with two felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and contraband to a prison; and two misdemeanor counts of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.She was arraigned by on-call District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, who set bail at $25,000 straight cash. She was unable to post the bail and was committed to the county prison in Pottsville. It was also noted she was being detained on a probation violation issued out of Lehigh County.
