Fast action by neighbors saves W. Penn restaurant

Two neighbors jumped into action last night to prevent a popular West Penn Township restaurant from going up in flames.

After seeing an orange glow coming from Maggie's Kitchen around 8:45, neighbors Mike Hornbeck and Ron Pratt called 911 and jumped into action to save the 60-year old family-style eatery."The entire kitchen was glowing orange," said Hornbeck, neighbor and son of restaurant owner Maggie Fish. "We kept telling ourselves, ' we gotta get in there.'"After kicking the door in, Pratt, who once served as a volunteer firefighter, grabbed a fire extinguisher and doused the growing flames, which were rising from a flat grill in the kitchen.Responding were West Penn Township Police and firefighters from West Penn, East Penn, Tamaqua and others; although most were turned back after initial firefighters determined the fire was extinguished by the neighbors.Firefighters placed fans at exit and entry points to the home.
