Two neighbors jumped into action last night to prevent a popular West Penn Township restaurant from going up in flames.

After seeing an orange glow coming from Maggie's Kitchen around 8:45, neighbors Mike Hornbeck and Ron Pratt called 911 and jumped into action to save the 60-year old family-style eatery."The entire kitchen was glowing orange," said Hornbeck, neighbor and son of restaurant owner Maggie Fish. "We kept telling ourselves, ' we gotta get in there.'"After kicking the door in, Pratt, who once served as a volunteer firefighter, grabbed a fire extinguisher and doused the growing flames, which were rising from a flat grill in the kitchen.Responding were West Penn Township Police and firefighters from West Penn, East Penn, Tamaqua and others; although most were turned back after initial firefighters determined the fire was extinguished by the neighbors.Firefighters placed fans at exit and entry points to the home. The restaurant was not open when the fire started.Schuylkill Parcel Locator online lists the owners of Maggie's Kitchen, 749 Penn Drive, as Mario and Francesca Loduca of Andreas.West Penn and Tamaqua Fire Police directed traffic around the area during the response.
