50 gallons of fuel oil spills into Little Schuylkill

ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS Hazmat responders were called to 245 West Rowe St. around 3:30 p.m. yesterday after fuel oil had reportedly spilled and leaked into the Wabash Tunnel located directly below the property. Following DEP guidelines and knowing that the Wabash Creek empties into the Little Schuylkill River, trained hazmat firefighters placed special absorption tubes in the creek to catch some of the fuel oil. Emergency responders were seen staged on Sewer Plant Road near the Spruce Street intersection for most of the response. Also assisting were Tamaqua Fire Chief Tom Hartz, Tamaqua Police Officer Mike Hobbs and Tamaqua Public Works director Rob Jones. Firefighters on scene stated that about 50 gallons had leaked into the Wabash Creek, then into the Little Schuylkill. Above, Tamaqua firefighters John Albert Jr. and Jeff Hartz place an oil absorption tube across the Wabash Creek.
