Phone book recycling slated in Carbon County

The Carbon County Department of Solid Waste will again host the Outdated Telephone Directory Recycling Program, also known as the Phone Book Recycling Program, from Feb. 1 through Feb. 22.

Participating schools will be keeping track of how many phone books are brought in. The books will then be picked up by the recycling office for recycling.The five highest collectors will receive an award from Carbon County and $100, donated by the Jim Thorpe National Bank and First Northern Bank and Trust of Palmerton.The student who brings in the oldest telephone book will also be given an award.In 2012, approximately 500 students participated, collecting 27,225 phone books. Since the program's inception in 1996, a total of over 350,000 phone books have been collected.For more information, call the Department of Solid Waste at (610) 852-5111 or your local elementary school.
