Mahoning crash results in four teenagers injured

Four people were injured, two reportedly seriously, during a one-car accident Sunday in Mahoning Township.

The crash happened at about 12:37 p.m. on Orioles Drive.Police said Ariel Shiffert, 18, of Lehighton was driving a 1997 Nissan 200sx east on Orioles Drive at an apparent high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason.According to police, the car spun counter clockwise, and slid across the roadway striking a tree on the westbound side of the road. There were three passengers in the car ages 15, 16, and 17. Their names were not released because of their age.Two of the passengers sustained moderate-major injuries, while the third sustained minor-moderate injuries. Two were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest.The driver and third occupant were transported to Gnaden Huetten for treatment. There was extensive compartment intrusion as a result of the impact.Police said none of the occupants were belted, and the front airbags deployed. There was significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.Charges against the driver are pending completion of the investigation.Lehighton Ambulance, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, and the Mahoning Valley Fire Company responded.Police also released information about an accident which occurred on Route 443 in the township on Thursday.At 6:06 p.m. Thursday, Mahoning Township Police were dispatched to an accident at the intersection of Mahoning Drive East (SR902), and Grist Mill Road.During the investigation, police determined that Pasquale Centofanti, 76, of Jim Thorpe was driving a 2010 Mazda 5.Police said Centofanti attempted to turn off of Grist Mill Road onto Mahoning Drive East and failed to stop, then yield to oncoming traffic and pulled into the path of an eastbound vehicle. This vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Cherokee, was driven by Suzette Kurtz age 52 of Lehighton.Kurtz was the only occupant of the Jeep. She was flown by Medevac 4 to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest and her condition is unknown.There were four occupants in the Mazda. They are:Patricia Letterio (driver side rear seat), 66, of Lehighton, who was flown by PennStar to St. Lukes Bethlehem. As of Friday, she was listed in critical condition.Centofanti (Driver) and Frank Letterio (Front seat passenger), 71, of Lehighton were taken by Mahoning Valley Ambulance to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest. Their conditions are unknown.Louise Centofanti, 72, of Jim Thorpe was taken by Lehighton Ambulance to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest, and her condition is unknown.Police said summary charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
