Week 5 saw us slip, sliding away

Week 5 of the high school football season was anything but a happy one for this corner.

Some mis-information headed our way and the end result was a 9-6 week, while TIMES NEWS Photo Editor Bob Ford, who is responsible for the great action shots you see in the sports section during the high school season, rose to the top with a 13-2 week.

He holds a four-game lead on Brad Hurley and Jason Boris. Yours truly, who was once tied for the lead a few weeks back, is now seven games behind as we've hit the midpoint of the regular season.

This week, there are numerous games that look easy on paper, so you will see quite a few of the picks are the same.

Kudos have to go out to TJ Engle who finally found his way out of the basement and is one game ahead of Rich Strack.

So let's take a look at what this week brings:

PANTHER VALLEY AT MARIAN - Colts got off to a slow start but have now won two in a row. Panthers moved the ball at Schuylkill Haven last week, but are looking for that one good defensive game. When I pick Marian, they lose. When I pick against them they win. This one goes to.....Panther Valley, 28-27.

PALMERTON AT NORTHWESTERN - Bombers are slowly getting healthier and could catch the Tigers in one of those "trap week's" with arch-rival Northern Lehigh waiting on the horizon next.....Palmerton, 21-20.

MINERSVILLE AT JIM THORPE - Mark Rosenberger has the Olympians liking that taste of victory that they didn't get to feel much the past two season.....JIm Thorpe, 35-7.

NORTH SCHUYLKILL AT TAMAQUA - Injuries haven't been kind to the Blue Raiders through the first half of the season. Now they face a North Schuylkill club that is putting it all together.....North Schuylkill, 18-14.

NORTHERN LEHIGH AT PEN ARGYL - Bulldogs got first win of the season last week, but got beaten up a bit. It's always tough to play on a Saturday afternoon in the Slate Belt.....Pen Argyl, 21-14.

POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST AT PLEASANT VALLEY - The Ol' Wooden Bucket game used to be played on the last week of the season. Now it comes earlier and the Bears are playing great football.....Pleasant Valley, 28-14.

LEHIGHTON AT EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH - As long as the Indians don't mind the long bus ride, they'll be okay.....Lehighton, 20-7.

EAST STROUDSBURG SOUTH AT DIERUFF - This one could be closer than you think. But when the dust clears, the Cavaliers get the "W".....East Stroudsburg South, 27-22.

ALLEN AT POCONO MOUNTAIN WEST - The Panthers surprised us last week. Can they put another one in the win column?.....Pocono Mountain West, 21-6.

NOTRE DAME AT SOUTHERN LEHIGH - Spartans have had some injuries that have slowed the offense down the last two weeks. They still have enough to win this one.....Southern Lehigh, 28-14w.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The Hurricanes might not need their strong winds to corral a victory here.....Schuylkill Haven, 31-14.

WILLIAMS VALLEY AT PINE GROVE - The Vikings and Cardinals enter this one both 5-0, so one of them has to taste defeat.....Williams Valley, 28-6.

ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT LIBERTY - The Hurricanes were shocked by the Golden Hawks last week. This week they bounce back.....Liberty, 14-13.

BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC AT WHITEHALL - The Zephyrs bounce back after losing to the Trojans last week.....Whitehall, 35-12.

PARKLAND AT NAZARETH - Trojans continue to roll and take it out on the Blue Eagles this week.....Parkland, 28-7.
