State police at Frackville had a busy weekend investigating several crashes on Schuylkill County roadways.

A one vehicle crash occurred about 5:26 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, along Interstate 81 in Delano Township. Troopers said Tuan Minh Huynh, 22, of Lebanon, was driving a 1999 Volkeswagon Jetta southbound in the left lane when he lost control on the snow-covered road. The car traveled onto the east berm and struck the Jersey barrier. The car came to rest on the east berm facing north.

Huynh was not injured but his car had to be towed from the scene. Troopers said he was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.

Troopers investigated another crash on I81 Friday about 5:36 p.m. in Foster Township. James Atherton, 66, of Scranton, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet box van owned by the American Red Cross, northbound and passing vehicles in the left lane which was snow and ice covered. He lost control of the van due to speed. The van went onto the east shoulder and rolled into a dirt and rock embankment, then flipped onto its roof.

Atherton was not injured but damages to the van were termed extensive. He was cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.

A one vehicle crash was reported about 4:50 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, along SR924, in West Mahanoy Township. Troopers said Wayne Warner, 42, of Ringtown, was driving a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck southbound when he said he fell asleep. The truck went onto the right berm and struck a utility pole.

Warner sustained a head injury and was transported to the Hazleton General Hospital by family members. Damages were termed heavy to the truck which was towed from the scene.

Troopers investigated a crash at 10:05 a.m. Saturday along SR61, half-way up the Frackville grade in Blythe Township. Troopers said Renee Austerberry, 27, of Shamokin, was driving a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero northbound in the left lane which was clear of snow at the time. She drifted off the road onto the slush covered shoulder on the west side.

This caused the car to enter into a sideslip, as it slid down a dirt embankment and into a deep, rocky drainage ditch. Austerberry was extricated from the vehicle by emergency personnel and taken to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, by Lifeflight helicopter.

Troopers said Austerberry will be charged with driving while under suspension-DUI related, no insurance, not wearing a seat belt, and driving on roadways laned for traffic.

The owner of the vehicle, Leroy Lebo Jr., of Shamokin, will be charged with permitting violation of title by allowing Austerberry to drive his vehicle while she was under suspension.

A crash was reported at 10:20 a.m. Saturday along Morea Road, near Burma Road, in Mahanoy Township. Jessica Ann Leon, 29, of Frackville, was driving a 2001 Dodge Caravan westbound when she lost control while negotiating a left curve. The van spun around and struck the guard rail on the north berm.

A front seat passenger, Valerie Stewart, 24, of Barnesville, and a rear seat passenger, a one-year-old male from Barnesville, were injured and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville. Leon was not injured.

Troopers said Leon was cited for traveling on roadways laned for traffic.

A crash occurred about 12:15 p.m. Saturday on the Burma Road, a mile east of Saint Clair, in Blythe Township. Troopers said Michael Handy, 19, of Mahanoy City, was driving a 1995 Toyota Corolla westbound when he lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered road. The car slid into a guide post on the north side. The back tires were worn out and contributed to the crash, troopers added.

Handy was not injured but damages were severe to the vehicle. He was cited for tire equipment and traction surfaces, troopers said.
