Snow-covered road causes crash
A snow-covered Schuylkill County road was blamed for a one-vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday, Dec. 8, about 4:10 p.m. It was one of three crashes investigated by state police at Frackville.
Troopers said Zachary J. Filozof, 19, of Ringtown, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Main Street in Gilberton, and negotiating a right curve when he lost control due to the snow on the road. The car spun 90 degrees and slid off the east shoulder and hit the side of an unoccupied home at 423 Main St.
Filozof was not injured but the car had to be towed from the scene. Troopers cited Filozof for driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.
A one-vehicle crash was reported at 10:26 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, along Interstate 81 in Kline Township. Troopers said Denise R. Montoya, 50, of Providence, R.I., was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra northbound when she lost control while negotiating a right hand curve on an ice and snow covered road. The car went onto the west berm and struck the guide rail, then back across the road and came to rest on the median.
Montoya and her passenger, Alex Montoya, 16, same address, were not injured. She was cited for driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.
A second crash occurred Friday about 10:53 p.m. along I81 in Foster Township. Troopers said Pohung Chiu, 28, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was driving a 2005 Acura TSX northbound in the left lane and attempting to pass a 2014 Mack tractor operated by Craig D. Wagner, 65, of Jonestown, Lebanon County. As he attempted to pass, slush was thrown onto the windshield of the Acura causing Chiu to lose control. The Acura sideswiped the truck then went onto the west berm where it struck an embankment before rolling over onto its roof.
Chiu and Wagner were not injured. Troopers cited Chiu for maximum speed limits.
