JT Earth Day's Community Environmental Celebration

The 2013 Earth Day's community environmental celebration is coming to Jim Thorpe this weekend, and offering 50 activities, performances and events. Except for the cost of workshop materials and special performances, they are all free.

It all starts on Saturday morning with a 9 a.m. cleanup walk along the riparian area of the Lehigh River. "The Lehigh River Clean Up is the most important event of the day," said Shelli Holland, organizer of Jim Thorpe Earth Day. "We will meet in the parking area next to the Jim Thorpe train station. Look for my green Volkswagen van."After volunteers are given gloves and trash bags, they are off to collect litter as they walk along the banks of the Lehigh River from Highland Beverage to the Rt. 903 bridge. A voucher, redeemable for either a T-shirt or food at an Earth Day stand, will be given to volunteers. This is the 43rd year celebrating Earth Day. The first Earth Day began in 1970 as an environmental teach in following the ravages of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. This spring festival has been celebrated for many years in Jim Thorpe, but because of the vagaries of spring weather, it has had more than its share of rain cancellations."We are hoping for good weather on Saturday," Holland said. "If not, we will hold it on Sunday. We are watching the weather; seeing how it's going to develop."Should there be any question about whether the Earth Day celebration is postponed or canceled, or for additional information, see: jimthorpeearthday.com.Here's a schedule of the events. At the bottom is a list of location abbreviations. All events are on Sat. April 20 unless postponed to Sunday April 21 due to rain. The Saturday Night Cafe & Pub Crawl will be held regardless of weather.Jim Thorpe Earth Day Schedule(Sat. April 20.
