Halloween parade draws large crowd

For nearly two hours crowds along the Lehighton Halloween parade route were delighted by the creative costumes, decorated floats, showy antics of the drivers of the tin lizzies, classic cars, fire trucks, ambulances and the musical entertainment of the marchers.

The weather was perfect for the crowd lining the route.The parade, moved this year to early Saturday afternoon, proved to be a perfect time to bring families together.Hilbert "Hilly" Haas, parade committee member and parade marshal, was pleased with the crowd attendance, community spirit and feeling of camaraderie that brought fun for everyone.The parade began with Cub Pack 145 serving as the "parade beggars."Haas said that the parade has a substantial cost and the "parade beggars" collected donations to go toward the awarding of prizes to the winners.Haas announced the first place winners:In the first division, in the Cub Scout Category, Cub Pack 145 won with "Soar into Scouting with Pack 145," with their "walking airplanes." Leaders are Louis Accardi and Dena Kistler.In the Girl Scout category, Daisy Troops 3176 and 38 tied for first place. Also taking a first was Cadette Troop 3583.Daisy Troop 3176's theme was, "It's Raining, It's Pouring the Dasies are Exploring," featured adorable little girls carrying decorated umbrellas.Their leader is Theresa Troutman.The theme for Daisy Troop 38 was "Crows in the Cornfield," with Lisa Fritz as the leader.The girls were black crows and their walking companion was a 10-foot-tall scarecrow on stilts.In the Girl Scout category, Cadette Troop 3583, "We Grow Girls Stronger Thru Scouting No Matter What Bugs Us," with leader Pamela Berger.The girls, wearing black and yellow bug costumes, carried big yellow flowers they crafted.Winning in the Preschool Category, was St. Matthew's Preschool which won by having creative costumes, such as a NASA astronaut.Their theme was' Our Preschoolers Are Out of This World," with Donna Ahner as the teacher.In the large float category, Jim Thorpe National Bank won with its float, "Join the Winning Team with Your Local Community," featuring a large football player on the float and a team of employees walking aside and behind the float.Winning the small float category, was D.J. Dave and Company, "Dave and Co. Boneyard, with Claude Davis on the scary float.In the Walking category, Tumble with Denise's, large crew of "Camryn's Ghouls," won with owner Denise Maradeo.The girls were doing cartwheels for Camryn, who was 6 years old when she passed from a brain tumor on Sept. 1 at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.Their goal is to raise funds and awareness for the Gift of Life Donor Program.Winning in the Miscellaneous Category, was Alden Everett, driving a 1954 Minneapolis Moline Model ZB tractorPrizes will also be awarded to second and third place winners, but the TIMES NEWS was not provided with that list of winners. Haas said checks will be sent to winners by mail.Julie Harris is the Lehighton Halloween Parade secretary/treasurer.
