Lower Tow. eyes grant for rec facility

Lower Towamensing Township is banking on a grant to pave the way for the construction of a parking lot at its recreational facility.

On a 2-0 vote at a special meeting on Friday, the township's board of supervisors agreed to adopt a resolution to file for the $116,375 grant. Supervisor Jesse Mendez was absent. The grant is a local share assessment fund, that, upon receipt, would permit the township to build the parking lot at the Stoney Ridge

P.A.R.C. along Fireline Road.Last month, supervisors awarded a contract to Bruce N. George Paving & Excavating, Kunkletown, in the amount of $79,520, to build basketball courts at the facility, contingent on the review of the township's engineer.Supervisors Chairman Ron Walbert noted at that time that the proposal from George was less than the $85,000 grant the township received from the Department of Conservation and Economic Development in July of 2011. That grant was secured through the office of state Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) and former state Rep./Speaker of the House Keith McCall. In March, supervisors agreed to award a contract to Livengood Excavators, Walnutport, in the amount of $138,885. That bid was broken down into two phases: $124,695 to level areas for the basketball courts, and install an erosion and sedimentation plan, with the other $14,190 to level various piles of soil. The township received a $108,000 grant for the E&S plan, but a certain contingency reduced that amount to $104,000. The township will use that, along with $34,000 from its general fund, to pay for the work.A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the park in June of 2009. The township purchased the land from the Knights of Columbus in 2000.
