The Lehigh Gorge area near Jim Thorpe has had its third fatality within two weeks.

Friday afternoon, a 54-year-old New Jersey man died after apparently being stricken with cardiac arrest while hiking with his children.The man was transported by ambulance to the Gnaden Huetten Campus of Blue Blue Mountain Health System where he was pronounced dead by the emergency room physician.The Carbon County Coroner's Office was summoned to investigate since the individual was dead on arrival at the hospital.Coroner Bruce Nalesnik said it appears the individual died from an apparent coronary.Nalesnik said the individual and his children were biking on the Delaware and Lehigh Heritage Corridor Trail, then decided to do some hiking. It was on the hiking trail that the man collapsed.It took rescue workers about an hour to get to the victim, bring him from the location where the medical emergency occurred, and transport him to the ambulance.The Lehighton Ambulance Association as well as the Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, and Nesquehoning Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene of Friday's incident.A medical transport helicopter was requested, but later that was withdrawn and the victim was transported to hospital by the ambulance.The trio of tragedies at the Gorge area north of Jim Thorpe began on August 12 when Lee Kenneth Mantz, 44, of Coaldale died after falling about 30 feet off a cliff face.The following day, August 13, Noah Krynock, 20, of Summit Hill, died in an apparent drowning near the entrance of Lehigh Gorge State Park in Jim Thorpe. The Lehighton Ambulance Association as well as the Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, and Nesquehoning Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene of Friday's incident.A medical transport helicopter was requested, but later that was withdrawn and the victim was transported to hospital by the ambulance.
