Carbon sheriff's office warns of phone scam

Lieutenant Dave Midas of the Carbon County Sheriff's Office has issued a notice about a telephone scam.

"Any citizen that receives a solicitation from any county sheriff's office especially Carbon County should contact our office immediately and ask to speak with the sheriff or a supervisor," Midas warned.Midas said it has come to their attention that there have been phone solicitation or communications using the name of the local sheriff's office. He said the callers identifies themselves as being with the local sheriff's office and requests the payment of fees, debts, or monies to satisfy warrants. The actor perpetrating this fraud may even use the threat of arrest if fees are not paid, Midas said. The phone number displayed on your telephone I.D. may be electronically blocked or may actually display the local sheriff's number."The sheriff's office is not in the practice of calling to collect fees or debts for any company or individual to satisfy a warrant," Midas explained."If you receive such a call asking for your credit card information or instructing you to wire funds to pay off a debt or write a check for a supposed amount owed, please get all the information you can from the caller and contact your local sheriff's office to check on legitimacy."
