District to save significant money

All signs indicate Northern Lehigh School District is set to realize a considerable savings in the 2012-13 school year.

Much to its liking, the school board learned on Monday of several areas in which the district is expected to save money.Scot Engler, director of special education, told the board 15 outplaced students have been brought back to the district, which will result in about a $300,000 savings.Engler added "We will be educating our own kids, which is very important."Superintendent Michael Michaels announced that the district will have a transient nurse who will be moved from Slatington Elementary to Peters Elementary.Michaels said the move is necessitated by the fact that there are "more health-needy" students at Peters Elementary.Greg Derr, director of support services and transportation, told the board the district has been able to eliminate two bus runs, which will result in a savings of about $75,000.Afterward, Director Mathias Green said he was pleased with the information shared by both Engler and Derr."I'm impressed; I think they did one heck of a job," Green said. "Thank you all very much; those are some great numbers I'm hearing."Board President Edward Hartman echoed that sentiment when he added "I think Mr. Green speaks for the whole board."Also on Monday, Derr announced that a rededication ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Slatington Elementary. The district embarked on a $21.4 million renovation project at the school aimed to ensure the safety and security of the building; improve the education of students; reunite the district's administrative team; and upgrade the infrastructureThe new, 110,000-square-foot building contains 24 classrooms, three computer labs, cafeteria space to seat 225 people, and an expanded gymnasium to seat 675 people. In other business, the board:- Appointed Ellen Kiss as the Administrative Detension Supervisor in the senior high school.
