State police at the Frackville barracks on Friday arrested an 18-year-old Mahanoy City man on charges of homicide in connection with the April 4 death of a man from that town.

Gene M. Slavinsky, 48, of 408 W. Centre St., was pronounced dead Thursday at 8:45 p.m. The following day, police arrested Jarvin Huggins, 18, of Room 17, White Owl Manor.The investigation is headed by the Troop L Major Case Team, the Schuylkill County District Attorney's and Coroner's offices and the Mahanoy City Police Department.Police said it is alleged the murder actually happened last Tuesday morning. At approximately 9 o'clock, police allege Huggins entered the victim's residence through a basement door to commit a burglary and theft.Police said he turned the electricity in the residence on and off several times to lure Slavinsky into the basement. When the victim went down the steps to the basement, he was struck multiple times in the head with an iron rod, police said.Police said Huggins stole numerous items from the residence, including the victim's car, which was used to transport the other stolen items from the scene.The man is being held in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, without bail. He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko of Port Carbon and charged with criminal homicide, burglary, robbery, aggravated assault, theft by unlawful taking and criminal trespass, as well as misdemeanor offenses of theft by unlawful taking and unauthorized use of automobiles.In an affidavit of probable cause, police said they conducted interviews Friday morning and learned an Acer laptop, cash, prescription medication and other items were stolen from the home. Police said they learned about Huggins' role in the murder when another resident of White Owl Manor told them Huggins asked him to help him unlock the laptop that had been password protected by Slavinsky.Police said they went to the housing units in an attempt to find Huggins, but learned he fled through a window. He was taken into custody near White Owl Manor by Lt. William Guth, criminal investigative section commander of Troop L, Reading, and Sgt. Michael Brownmiller, crime unit supervisor.Police said they found a laptop inside a backpack Huggins had in his possession. Upon further investigation at the Frackville station, police said, Huggins admitted to the murder and burglary.Police said Slavinsky was found by borough police officers on the basement floor of the home with what appeared to be severe head injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan said an autopsy was conducted at Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, to determine the exact cause of death.
