Pleasant Valley's MCTI students score big at SkillsUSA competition

At the Pleasant Valley School District meeting, board director Dominick Sacci gave his Monroe Career and Technical Institute (MCTI) report. He announced that at the recent SkillsUSA District 11 Championships held in Allentown, 70 MCTI students participated. The contest by the national nonprofit organization, helps college and high school students prepare for careers in trades, and technical and skilled service occupations. Over 400 students from five area career and technical schools competed against each other in trade and leadership competitions.

The following MCTI students from Pleasant Valley placed at the District 11 SkillsUSA Competition. All first place winners will go on to compete at the Pennsylvania SkillsUSA Championships April 18-20 in Hershey.First Place: Advertising Design, Bryona Vasquez; Architectural Drafting, Mason Silfee; Health Knowledge Bowl,Priscilla Rodriguez and Samantha Healy; Medical Math, Katlin Lees; Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Katie Green, Samantha Leitch and Brittney Gonzalez.Second Place: Architectural Drafting, Justin Rappa; Customer Service, Christina Cenextant; Diesel Equipment Technology, Kurtis Makes; Food and Beverage Service, Christine McClellan; Nurse Assisting, Duncan Rodriguez; Team Works, Michael DeStefano; Technical Computer Applications, Vincent Bontempo; Technical Drafting, Jeremy Shauer.WeldingThird Place: Automated Manufacturing Technology, Joe Lammond; Crime Scene Investigation, Brody Wagner; Building Maintenance Technology, Parker Johnson; Job Interview, Sereena Myers; Masonry, Josh Silfee.Board director Susan Kresge reported that Governor Tom Corbett announced the proposed 2012-2013 state budget and that it looks like Pleasant Valley will receive less state aid than last year.The board approved passing the Charter School resolution, 8-0, in which it states that "the Pleasant Valley School Board urges its elected officials to support legislation that relieves the financial burden on school districts created by charter schools."
