In the biggest give-away to the American public of surplus food in well overe a decade, people with low incomes were handed a free five-pound box of American cheese at the Lehighton National Guard Armory. Recipients are Carbon County residents with a welfare card, Supplementary Security Income (SSI) card, or Medicare card required as proof of eligibility. Charlotte Minnich, executive director of the Red Cross, said that Carbon County has been allotted 7,200 pounds of cheese.
