Zehner sidelined

Amy Zehner's college basketball career got off to an incredible start.

Recently discovered health problems now have that career in jeopardy. The Bucknell freshman and Tamaqua High School graduate recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in her first-ever college game.Zehner followed that with a 25-point performance against Youngstown State in her third collegiate game and a 20-point effort against Buffalo just three nights later.Following those back-to-back 20-point performances in mid-November, Zehner was named the Patriot League Anaconda Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. It was the first time in league history that the same player has been awarded both honors in the same week. Zehner closed out the voting period with a 22.5 scoring average to go along with three rebounds, three steals, three blocks and two-and-a-half assists per game.It was also around that time that Zehner, a three-time TIMES NEWS Girls Basketball Player of the Year, first started to experience some health issues."It was back in November when I first started having some problems," Zehner told the TIMES NEWS Monday night. "I've had some tests on my heart and I'm currently seeing a doctor in Allentown."We're still trying to figure out exactly what the problem is and what our next step is going to be. I've gotten some test results back, but I'm still waiting on others."After leading the Division I Bison in scoring and minutes played through the first five games, Zehner sat out the next three contests when she first started experiencing some health problems.Zehner returned to the lineup against the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Dec. 3 and also played the team's next two games against Fordham and Cornell, although she averaged just over 12 minutes a game during that three-game span. Zehner has not played since going scoreless in nine minutes of action against Cornell on Dec. 18, missing the last five Bison games."I'm currently on an indefinite leave from the basketball team," Zehner said. "I'm also not back in school yet. I've been staying at home so I can get to my doctor appointments."Despite playing just eight games, Zehner leads team in scoring (9.8 ppg.) and is second in rebounds (4.6). She is also second in minutes played (26.6)."Right now, I'm just trying to be patient and stay positive," Zehner said. "It's obviously a pretty difficult time for me."I just have to wait until all the test results are back and see what my doctor advises."
