Ruth Huhn, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, will celebrate her 101st birthday on Christmas Day.

Born in Brooklyn, Indiana in 1911, Ruth was the first born child of the late William F. and Jennie V. (Witmer) Weber. Her father was born and raised in Weatherly and was a telegrapher for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Both parents and Ruth's family were members of Salem Reformed Church in Weatherly, now known as Salem United Church of Christ.

Ruth had two younger sisters, Martha J. (Weber) Romano and Mary (Weber) Marusak; and a younger brother, Leo J. Weber, who lived with her after fire destroyed the family homestead. She is the last living member of her family.

Upon finishing school, Ruth was employed at the Reed and Lovatt silk mill in Weatherly.

She met the love of her life, Frederic Rose Huhn and they were married on Feb. 24, 1935 by the Rev. C.T. Moyer in Salem Reformed Church.

During the early years of their marriage they lived in Norwalk, Conn.; Palmerton; and Lansford. Following World War II they returned to Weatherly. Ruth worked as a secretary at Tung-Sol Electric Company.

Though Ruth and Fred never had any children of their own, they fulfilled their parenting needs by providing surrogate love and compassion to many community adolescents who needed a loving, stable environment.

Ruth and her husband were passionate Penn State football fans and traveled to all home games and many playoff games until his passing in 1983.

Ruth has always been a very involved and caring woman. She belonged to the Gray Ladies of Weatherwood since it was formed.

She loves to play cards and play party bridge with her friends. She also is a member in the church choir; a Salem quilter; a consistory member; an assistant organist; a women's fellowship member; and a Sunday school teacher.
