A new year and the law of the firsts

Dear editor:

As the year 2011 draws to a close I cannot help wonder what resolutions I will make to improve my lifestyle. It seems that every year we all do the same ole stuff. You know - clean the garage, take out the trash, lose weight and be nicer to your spousal equivalent.Well, I have a different idea for next year. I'll call it "remember the first time." Think about all the happy moments we had in our life with the many first-time experiences we had. You know ... when I first shot my first buck, got my first car (boy, was that a bucket of bolts). How about your first date in high school and who did you take? Talk about happy and nervous all in the same day!As you know, when the first time has passed, the second event does not have the thrill of the first time. How about you first child and their first day at school? And even more thrilling, remember your first grandchild?Well, this is where my concept takes place. As you get older, the frequency of firsts begin to diminish. Oh! They're there ... you just don't think of them. I believe the more time you spend looking for the firsts in your life, the happier and a more fulfilling life you'll live. It doesn't matter how old you are. Even in your 90s, there will be first-time events that will float your boat.Try eating a food that you never had for the first time.Put some gas in your grandfather's car.Smile at folks you don't know. (They will wonder what you are up to).Give someone that last parking space close to the front of the store. So you have to walk a little farther. So what, you need the exercise. How about shopping just for the food bank or thank a veteran for serving?I think if you put your mind to it, you will discover many firsts in your life that you have yet to experience. The best part is, this experience will become a good habit, and good habits become addictive.Good luck and this is a first time for me to wish you all a happy New Year.Ken Treger,Lehighton
