Seven seniors graduated from the last season's Weatherly varsity basketball program that struggled through a 2-22 campaign.

However, with fifth-year head coach Ron Cann at the helm, the team is taking a realistic approach to the season and should be more than capable of getting things together for the Wreckers."We have to work on the fundamentals of the game," Cann admits. "Most of these kids are going to be thrust into the limelight and they haven't been there before. So it should be difficult for them. Even if we lose some of our opening games, I just hope they play well so we need can develop their confidence because they just haven't been there."Cann hopes that his new varsity players can adjust to the varsity game early because the season gets off to a quick start and never really slows down."We're very young this season with four freshmen on the roster, so one of our main goals is to improve on our abilities with the fundamentals of the game," Cann mentioned. "Hopefully, as the season goes along, these things will work out."There's no better place to start looking than at the center spot for individuals that Cann can count on to contriubte for the Wreckers. Samson Walton is the probable starter at center and go-to-guy on the offensive end of the floor."I'm an inside-out type of coach and that's the style of offense that we will probably be running in a half-court set," Cann stated. "We'll more than likely look to Samson first when we're running an offense. If that isn't there, then we can work on penetrating and maybe kicking it out for a jumper, but that's what we're working on in the early-going so far."Guards that Weatherly can rely on are: Brett Stallone (Jr, 5-10), Josh Reiner (So., 5-8), and Scott Coll (5-5, So. point guard). Joe Haganey (Jr. F 5-11) will round out the starting five and will be counted on for rebounding and inside scoring."We're a 'work-in'progress,' and we're a very small team, so we're going to need to box out," Cann related. "We're fairly quick, so we're going to have to run a bit in order to stay in games."The transition game, along with strong play in the backcourt, is essentially what the Wreckers have utilized in the past. However, the guards will need to develop and mature in the early-going, in order to accomplish that feat.Look for three freshmen to get quality minutes and aid in the overall efforts of the 2011-12 WHS squad in Luke Reiner (5-9 guard), Nick Miller (5-8 guard) and Tyler Sipler (6-0 forward).As for the strategic breakdown for Cann in approach to their opponents on the schedule this year, their defense should be an eclectic mix."Defensively, we'll be doing a combination of everything, from zone to man, to pressing...we'll see what we need to do as the situation presents itself," Cann stated.With only thirteen players on the rosters of Varsity and JV combined, depth may be an issue as the season goes along. However, Cann feels confident in his players' abilities and looks forward to the challenge."In our division, we have Mahanoy Area, Marian, and Shenandoah Valley," Cann said. "So we'll be tested early and often."Watch out for those Wreckers, as they will be giving their best efforts each game, in hopes of improving upon last year's record and attaining greatness.
