World Lions Day

Western Pocono Lions, Lioness and Leos helped make the local involvement in World Lions Day a success, says Past Council Chair and Chairman Lion Christopher J. Sweeney of the annual project to take seniors for a ride in the countryside to see the fall foliage.The guests, from four different personal care homes and rehabilitation centers including Brookmont in Effort, Mrs. Bush's in Kunkletown, Getz's in Jonas and Wesley Rehabilitation in Brodheadsville, had a great day outdoors, he adds.Western Pocono Lioness Club provided cookies that were distributed to guests and employees at the four sites and the PVHS Leo Club members.Sweeney started this program for World Lions Day 33 years ago and has been grateful to all the Lions, Lioness, Leos and Personal Care Homes that have participated over the years. The Lions have provided rides for about 1,500 seniors during this time frame.Anyone wishing more information about the program can contact Sweeney at (570) 992-7350PVHS presenter at PMCDr. Douglas Arnold, superintendent of the Pleasant Valley School District, was one of several presenters at the recent Pocono Medical Center evaluation of the results of a community assessment that was done by PMC.His focus was a perspective on education as it pertains to kindergarten through 12th grade.Joining him on the panel were Monroe County Commissioner Chairwoman Suzanne McCool, speaking about government; Michael Tukeva; John Baujan, Stroud Area Regional Police; Peggy Howarth, Monroe County Transportation Authority; Sheila Theodora, Behavioral Health; and Pastor Dave Crosby, Pocono Community Church, on faith-based issues.After the panel presentation four discussion groups were formed so that everyone could give input.Each group's responses were reported and those items will be collected and re-evaluated.West End RotaryThe featured speaker at the Thursday, Oct. 20, breakfast meeting of the West End Rotary at the Western Pocono Community Library will be Dr. Art Scott. He will speak about Northampton Community College.Pink Light WalkA Pink Light Walk is being hosted by West End Happenings on Thursday, Oct. 20 at the American Legion.
