Garden Club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met Sept. 27 in the social hall at Zion's Church in the Lewistown Valley. President June Leiby conducted the business session.The evening's program was presented by Kenny Fetherolf of Forget Me Not Florist of Orwigsburg. In keeping with the evening's theme of an arrangement using a lunch box or bag, Fetherolf constructed an arrangement using his father's old lunch pail and items commonly found along the roadside, such as twigs, fallen tree bark and goldenrod. He advised checking such items for insect infestations before bringing them indoors. Other items suitable as an arrangement container include items such as hollowed out pumpkins and gourds and brown paper or gift bags. He and Louise Flexer served as judges for the arrangements made by club members.June Leiby was awarded first place for her lunch box arrangement. Other prize winners were: Mary Bridygham, second; Ruth Gerber, third; Evelyn Adams and Debbie Balliet, honorable mention. Specimens for the evening were mums, with Evelyn Adams awarded first and second places, while Ruth Gerber earned third place.During a brief business meeting, plans for the October dinner were finalized. The dinner will be held at 6 p.m., on Oct. 25, at St. Joseph's Church Hall in Summit Hill. The program will be presented by Donald Serfass. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include a Joyous Noise Offering for the American Heart Association Walk. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 11:30 a.m.; Daisies, Cub Scouts and Brownies meet at 6 p.m.Activities for next week include: Monday, food co-op meets at 9 a.m.; Tuesday, theater rehearsal at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Retirees meet at 10 a.m.; Thursday, Prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Worship and Music Committee meets at 6 p.m., Junior Girl Scouts meet at 6:30 p.m.The choirs rehearse on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: Juniors at 7 p.m.; and Seniors at 7:45 p.m.Tamaqua Public Library newsThe Tamaqua Public Library is gearing up for National Book Month, which will be held in October. Activities will be held throughout the month, including amnesty week and Teen Read Week.Amnesty Week will be held Oct. 9 through Oct. 15. Fees on all overdue books will be waived during this time. This includes all late fees, giving procrastinators an opportunity to return late books, allowing other patrons to enjoy these editions.Teen Read Week is scheduled for Oct. 16-22. This year's theme is "Picture It @ Your Library." The Teen Read Program will be held Oct. 20, beginning at 6 p.m.Readers age 12 and up are welcome to give a short presentation on their favorite book.
