Two Marines were presented with the Four Chaplains Award for their service and dedication given to local organizations and religious traditions while serving with the Schuylkill Carbon Marine Corps League Detachment 626. Pastor Robert Johnson, Lehighton, and Al Cheese, Andreas, received the prestigious award during the VFW Post 5069's All Veterans Picnic held recently at Cheese's Grove in Andreas. The Four Chaplains, also sometimes referred as the "Immortal Chaplains," were four United States Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel during the sinking of the troop ship USAT Dorchester during World War II. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains were seen with joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. Cheese was also presented with a ceremonial flag from the VFW Post 5069.
